What is generative engine optimization?
Generative Engine Optimization is the practice of making a company’s verified knowledge accurate, structured and citable, so AI systems can understand and correctly represent it. It differs from SEO less in technique than in failure mode: an SEO problem is being ranked low; a GEO problem is being described wrongly, confidently, to someone who never visits your site.
The same work, aimed at a different failure
SEO optimizes for
- Position in a ranked list of links
- Clicks arriving at your page
- Keywords a person typed
- Being chosen from among visible options
GEO optimizes for
- Being understood correctly by a system that assembles an answer
- Being verifiable, so a claim can be trusted
- Being citable, so it can be attributed
- Being consistent, so sources do not contradict each other
The six stages
Authority before amplification: publishing more before the knowledge is correct multiplies contradictions.
- 01
Discover
What do AI systems currently say, and where does it come from?
- 02
Understand
What is actually true — entities, products, relationships.
- 03
Verify
Check each fact against a citable source; mark what cannot be supported.
- 01
Trust
Make the authoritative source unambiguous, structured, consistent across languages.
- 02
Cite
Give AI systems something specific and attributable to quote.
- 03
Recommend
Monitor representation, and correct the source when it drifts.
What nobody can promise
No one controls what a generative system outputs. A promise of a ranking, a position or a visibility figure is exactly the sort of unsupported claim this practice exists to remove. The work makes the accurate answer easy to find, verify and attribute — it does not guarantee a given system uses it.
Questions buyers ask
- Should we publish more content?
- Usually not first. Publishing before the underlying knowledge is correct and consistent multiplies contradictions rather than authority. Verify, then publish.
- Does GEO replace SEO?
- No. They address different failure modes and mostly reinforce each other. The mistake is assuming SEO tactics automatically produce GEO outcomes.
